Dr. Gary Yarnell

Dr. Gary Yarnell graduated from Cornell University's distinguished School of Veterinary Medicine  in 1977 as one of the school's youngest graduates. Driven by his passion for the field, he was able to complete his undergraduate studies at Cornell in two-and-a-half years with a Bachelor of Science degree, and then was immediately accepted to the Veterinary College.

At the culmination of a lifelong dream, Dr. Yarnell purchased what is now the Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital from Dr.Howard Harmon in 1980. At the time, the practice consisted of one part-time and one full-time veterinarian, with a support staff of four. Building a reputation as a skilled and caring doctor, Dr. Yarnell was available to his patients and their owners 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The work was hard, challenging, yet extremely rewarding. Since that very first year, the practice under his leadership, experienced a rapid and sustained growth. Today, the Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital employs five full-time veterinarians and a support staff of 28 individuals in a new state of the art facility. Never one to rest on his laurels, Dr. Yarnell continually strives to "raise the bar " of veterinary standards of practice.

Dr. Yarnell grew up in Oceanside, on Long Island's South Shore, and has lived in Rye with his wife Laurie, a writer, since 1981. They have two children: Nikki, an aspiring singer/actress and a recent graduate of Northwestern's School of Music, and Adam, currently attending Brown University. Of course, they will never be empty-nesters with Maggie, their Lab, and Kayley, their Standard Poodle, sharing their bed and their hearts.

Dr. Yarnell has enjoyed the experience of living and working in the same community. The camararderie and connection to the community has proven to be one of the nicest fringe benefits of his career.

Dr. John Pisciotta

a

Dr. John Pisciotta is one of America's leading experts on exotic pets, a category that includes everything from baby turtles to boa constrictors. At the Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital in Westchester, New York, more than 50% of his patients are exotics, often the result of referrals from other veterinarians, bird clubs, and breeders.

Dr. Pisciotta has been fascinated with exotic pets since his childhood on Long Island. Both of his parents shared his love of all animals and his special interest in exotic pets. As a result, at one time or another, their home was host to snakes, turtles, tortoises, frogs, lizards, birds, ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits, mice and many other "pocket pets." This fascination with animals led to Dr. Pisciotta's first job, conducting tours for a local park.

It was no surprise that after completing his undergraduate education at Muhlenberg College and his graduate studies at Purdue, Dr. Pisciotta became a veterinarian. He served an internship at the famed Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, and became an active member of the Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians, as well as the Association of Avian Veterinarians.

Having shared quarters with so many different species of animals at one time or another, Dr. Pisciotta feels very comfortable handling, examining and discussing the proper care of  all exotic pets. A major part of his work is educating people about the needs of these very special pets. Often he has to explain that because they require too much care and don't adapt well to captivity, certain animals simply don't make good pets. Because preventive medicine is most important with such pets, he urges his clients to learn as much as possible about the basic care, nutrition and husbandry of any "exotic" animal they wish to keep. According to Dr. Pisciotta, "there is always more to learn about these facinating animals."

Dr. Pisciotta lives in Westchester, N.Y. with his wife Stephanie, their three children, and assorted four and two-legged friends.
